Before there is knowledge management, there is information management. Before there is personal knowledge management, there is personal information management. It may sound trivial but managing personal information leading towards a knowledge base is the immanent goal of information work. Information work is a new type of work that notetaking tools implemented. The clarity that information management is a task in itself is made possible only with the advent of AI. It was possible to directly get to knowledge, processing human hallucinations, those days are over. Any writing task begins with either a generated draft or a set of links.
Notion's updates are getting better. The more you use an application, the more you get used to it, and the productivity improvement is subject to this association. When a tool does something well, you tend to depend more on it, and specific features is why you keep returning to it. Notion was really bad to write with a while back, especially because its onboard dictionary was a mess. It works very well now and is less glitchy than before. There are also way too many bells and whistles for collaboration, but the early features that made Notion what it was seem well ironed these days. Its 100 million benchmark is well deserved.
AI in Notion is an addon and like the application it does not have any prescribed way to use it. As with links from an internet search, any LLM generates a layer to work with. Only if you know what you want out of the machined content will any of the customer facing AI products have any use for you. This requires spending time trying to work with the tools. With this update are two ways to interact with the model in app. The the block level - press ‘space’ for AI (Ctrl + j) and the hybrid search chat interface (Ctrl + Shift + j) retrieved either on the bottom right or top left tab in the sidebar. Optimisation of AI tools is that new component of information work to content with.
Block-level spelling and grammar edits may be the feature I use the most. It is the single most feature that’s got me writing on Notion. AI automates small and medium scale tasks well, the addon works at the block level. Trying to fix a set of blocks, I wouldn’t recommend. Beyond four to five blocks of generation is most often useless. To get the best results from generated text, multiple services are needed. Create outlines in Perplexity, draft in Claude, rewrite and proof in Notion, and check grammatical inconsistences with Grammarly. Managing this workflow is the information work. Once an information product is processed, its dissemination and archival is knowledge work.
