Today and tomorrow I am briefly thinking out loud about the two books of RBC 6 Syntopical. I have written this elsewhere but Range, I had with me a while back. There are several reading and writing assignments that I am yet to do therefore this is mostly a set of fleeting first impressions. If a book is well written it does well. That is my opinion. Range is well written. It was also a book that was a reaction to the 10,000hrs phenomenon that gave a few serious anxieties to those who felt left out. Epstein cites that too. It does well because of all of this. If a book does well and is recommended by more people you have an idea that can transcend a generation, almost. Non-friction books have a tone. They have good stories and most of the time the stories are meant to have a moral or prove a point. It is worth considering if the idea or concept discussed through the narrative is applicable to you. All this is in the American corporate environment, I have access only from a distance. It is key to keep in mind resources that make the success stories possible. To replicate them most of the time again is not feasible, since even time, in addition to context can result in different results. There are other things I could counter but a position that I would hold is, in some professions, especially in the arts and creative industry, requires as basic domain knowledge a range of skills to produce knowledge. That aspect is not considered extra-ordinary but is given. I would point out the Van Gogh story. How he tried several professions before he started painting. The work he produced was factored significant after his time fulfilling the criteria of recognition of a different generation. Great art is recognized first and then the artist receives recognition later. This can be elaborated but in most examples, it is possible to punch holes in. It is therefore recommended to read these books with an amount of informed skepticism.
